Speed matters in your career. It signals intent, proactiveness, and a strong sense of ‘go-getter’ attitude.

1) Job applications — applying quickly to a job posting has a significant impact on success rates. LinkedIn, for example, found that applying within the first 10 minutes can increase your chances of hearing back by up to 4X 🤯. Why is this? Fast responses signal high intent — all else equal, companies prefer candidates who are super energetic and responsive. Additionally, many companies are moving faster-than-ever on hiring so they can get back to their ‘core work’.

2) Success on-the-job — there’s plenty of memes about this online (like ‘the swiss chris’ from Goldman Stanley — IYKYK 😂).

Jokes aside, there’s a big hint of truth to this.

The vast majority of superstars I’ve worked with, especially juniors, always respond frighteningly (and impressively) fast. They never need any chasing or make the managers worry whether they’re on top of a task; in fact, quite the opposite — they’re normally the ones chasing other people to speed it up 🙂.

I always tell juniors on my team — please be so on top of things that you make ME feel like the slacker and the bottleneck. If you do this in your work place, I’d bet your seniors notice and appreciate you.

Best,

Vincent (follow our Instagram for bite-sized career insights & updates 🙂)
