A few years ago, putting "AI " on your resume was a cool differentiator. Today, every applicant claims proficiency with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Copilot.

When everyone knows the same tool, the tool stops being the advantage. The same happened with Excel, Powerpoint, even LinkedIn. Nobody gets hired because they know how to use Excel. Eventually (or already), knowing how to use AI becomes baseline.

When we speak with our 100+ company partners on how they evaluate talent in the age of AI, a few noteworthy trends emerge.

1) Outcomes over everything. ā€œI know Pythonā€ doesn’t stand out anymore; the strongest applicants have built software, launched them, AND made money from it 🤯. Other examples:

  • Before: ā€œI built a financial modelā€; today: I built the model, have contrarian assumptions based on weeks of deep-dive research, and made $ in my personal portfolio from investing in these stocks as a result.

  • Before: ā€œI’m the president of XX clubā€; today: I’m the president, AND I’ve led the biggest marketing campaign in club’s history to increase membership by 20%, spearheaded a drive donating ~$13,000 worth of clothes to underprivileged communities, and launched the biggest mentorship network in University X with 60+ mentors and 300+ mentees.

  • Before: ā€œI know Canva and Capcut really wellā€; today: here’s my portfolio, including a social media channel I started & scaled for my club that went from 0 to 8,500 followers in 3 months due to a mix of superior content creation (Canva / Capcut etc.), captivating storylines, and aggressively figuring out & implementing latest ā€˜virality hacks.’

2) Having a strong sense of agency & ownership — nothing new, but a new bar now separates the good from the great.

  • What used to differentiate top performers: those who are given a problem and proactively come up with solutions to present to leadership (vs. those who go to their boss with the problem and expect a solution handed to them).

  • Now there’s a new breed: those who IDENTIFY the problem in the first place AND come up with the solution. They notice what needs to be fixed before anyone’s raised it, and take ownership in fixing these issues. They show up saying something casual like ā€œoh btw, I noticed this problem/issue in our launch campaign….but don’t worry, I’ve already fixed it so this update is just a FYI.ā€

3) Networking — needless to say, human-to-human relationships are becoming increasingly important in the age of AI. Getting someone to vouch for you is an undeniable advantage in a world where signals are otherwise over-abundant.

How to network well, gain the trust of those around you, and have them vouch for you — there’s too many insights to just list here. We’ve run networking workshops for 800+ learners (across SG government and key university partners). If getting better at networking is something you’re legitimately keen on, let me know by directly responding to this email, and we’ll let you know when our next (free) networking workshop takes place — likely Nov/Dec’26. Limited spots.

Best,

šŸ“£ Thank you to our partner Atlassian! New Jira platform built for those keen on Product roles to stand out in the workplace (especially Product Managers):

AI made PMs faster. Multiplayer mode is still broken.

A PM can summarize research, draft a PRD, and mock up a prototype before lunch. The hard part starts when the team has to decide what actually gets built.

Jira Product Discovery gives product teams one place to capture insights, prioritize ideas with consistent frameworks, and build living roadmaps stakeholders can rally around.

And because it’s connected to Jira, the context behind every decision stays with the work—so developers and their agents know not just what to build, but why.

AI helps PMs move faster. Jira Product Discovery helps the whole team build with confidence.
